Games Workshop bans Warhammer fan flicks

Lost the plot

NOTTINGHAM BASED Games Workshop plans to crack down on fans who dress up as dwarves, elves and orcs and make fan flicks based around its Warhammer 40,000 game.

According to Slashdot, dozens of fans have made such flicks over the last few years and some of them have some impressive special effects.

One of them, the German Damatus is probably the most elaborate. However the Games Workshop has decided to forbid distribution of the film just as it was being readied for release.

It has also amended its IP Policy to forbid any such projects in the future.

It is not clear in the case of Damnatus if Games Workshop can get away with it. They had apparently already given approval for the film.

Some of the people on Slashdot think that the treatment is so unfair that Damnatus should go for an illegal internet distribution.

The likes of Star Trek and Star Wars have managed to get a large amount of enthusiasm for their products by allowing fan productions. It seems that Games Workshop might have lost the plot a bit on this one. µ
