Former Apple bosses buy their own foundry

Jazzing up their lives

THREE FORMER Apple executives have bought their own specialty foundry Jazz Semiconductor for $260 million.

According to the EE Times, Gilbert Amelio, Ellen Hancock and Steve Wozniak run a blank cheque outfit called Acquicor.

Jazz Semiconductor is a silicon-germanium (SiGe)wafer foundry.

It was originally a part of Conexant which spun-out Jazz. The move means that Jazz has given up on a planned initial public offering which is probably wise because it has been losing money and is struggling.

Amelio thinks the outfit is poised to take advantage of growth opportunities for speciality foundry services. We are not sure where he got that from.
