Parents prefer violence to sex

At least on their kids' games
Monday, 14 April 2008, 08:15

A US gaming site for parents, WhatTheyPlay.com, has been running a survey of its readers in a bid to find out what their preferences on games their child should play.

A question of the day posed the question as a parent, which would you find most offensive in a video game?

The results were surprising. Parents were happy with their children seeing scenes of graphic violence but were a bit squeamish when it came to two adult sharing a passionate snog together.

More parents were okay with swearing or even the odd severed head in video games just so long as human relationships were not mentioned.

This might be a US thing. A similar poll at a Norwegian gaming site found that 65.8 per cent would be more offended by violence than sex. It might just be what you are used to.

In the former British Colony of Virginia there are guns and more violence. In Norway there are beautiful fjords and long summer nights which are perfect for the shag in Norway. µ

US preference

Seeing as though the largest sex industry in the world is in the US I see perfect sense in this.

This is how people should raise their children. Under a masking cloak so they will see the world as their parents want them to see it.

If people started seeing what they wanted, if they started seeing things that their parents feel strongly against, well that would be just horrible.

I see how millions of teenagers will go blind, deaf, dumb and mute if they don't do what their parents tell them to do.

Ironically every generation & every teenager has a natural tendency to rebel against his or her parents.

Those same parents that prefer violent content over sexual content have rebelled against their parents.

So my advice to young people everywhere is to do as their parents say & never do as their parents do, cause parents know best.

Hippies

That puts a new twist on the hippie slogan. If you ask the parents it's: "Make war, not love"

Obviously...

I think this is seriously messed up, even disgusting.
But of course they prefer violence to sex, this is americans we are talking about here.

Violence is completely fine with them, but a bit of nudity in something like a game and they freak out big time.

They're all backwards. They have the mentality of people from the 1800's.

Accepting self in the mirror

I think those parents prefer violence than sex because it will be embarassing for them to comment on that topic since they did it in the past, for violence they still can say something about it since most of them are at the bright side and they can say " No child, you shouldnt hit that police so hard" RATHER than "No child U shouldnt bang her up and down like ME AND YOUR MUM" , its more like a matter of accepting own past behaviour.

I think if most of the parents live a violent past, they will prefer their child having SEX game rather than violence one right? ;P

I think the explanation

is that there is very little likelihood of your child going out and cutting someone's head off after seeing it in a movie or game, but there is a VERY high likelihood that the impressionable child will want to go play grab ass (and then who knows what) after watching some steamy love scene.
US parents are more afraid of their child having an un-wed baby than they are of their child cutting people's heads off - Puritan values after all.
If you, or a country in general, is more afraid of their child going out an cutting someone's head off, doesn't that reflect quite poorly on your child's wit?

Obviously not

If only America had the mentality of people from the 1800's. 1800's was a better time to live with smarter people. The entire world has gotten dumber with Europe leading the charge and the US trying to keep up.

Anyhow, violence is entertaining (and everyone is numb to it by now) while people shagging is boring to watch in addition to the results from hollywood always leads to women being devalued as they become objects.

@ JP

JP your comment is retarded.
Do you really think kids will go out and have sex after seeing it in a game or film?
Lets look at statistics shall we, take Norwegian people as mentioned in the article, there country has a way lower crime and rape rate than in the US. Yet nudity and sex is far more acceptable, and violence is a lot less acceptable. And if you look at other European countries that are like this it's the same.

I think you're just trying to defend your messed up country rather than actually thinking about it and looking at the facts.

actually...

"They're all backwards. They have the mentality of people from the 1800's"

MOST of us don't, and find this disparity equally sad and hypocritical. it's only a VOCAL minory that have a great deal of political and media power.

the under-40 crowd in the US is pretty open-minded when it comes to sex and violence both. it's the old farts we can't seem to get rid of that are giving us all a bad name.

honestly, i think it's a strong indicator of a sick society when parents advocate showing their kids decapitation and graphic gore over sex.

L O L

"1800's was a better time to live with smarter people" .... wow you REALLY think that?? ... i'm lost for words.
See this is one of the biggest problems with the US, SO many of you are very uneducated in comparison to other civilized countries. If more of you got better educations and crawled out of your hole once in a while there would be a lot less amazing stupid people like this.

@ Spud, nice to see you aint all as stupid as the person quoted above.

Then why did this result come out of a survey?

@B

I'm not from that country. The filth and vitriol in the tone of your message speaks for itself. I truly apologize for providing an alternative insight...gasp!

Or maybe...

Or maybe it is caused by the fact that americans are "educated" (designed, brainwashed) to have so much conflicts regarding sex, while being desensitized to violence.

The average american is designed to be childish as long as possible. You just have to look at the movie rating system, that perfectly reflects that fact.
