ATI forms lines to take on Nvidian GX2

7950GX2 against X1900 CrossFire
Thursday, 1 June 2006, 12:37
ATI MAY NOT come out with Quad CrossFire right now, but the company isn't standing still when it comes to events on June the 5th, Nvidia's launch of the GeForce 7950GX2.

While the street price for the 7950GX2 will bobble between 600 - 650 dollars/euros, ATI plans to take on the product with its CrossFire package. Right now, the 7950GX2 is being sold for around $850, attracting those with fat wallets and slim-line craniums.

At the same time, you can now order a ATI X1900XTX plus X1900 CrossFire Edition card combo for around 800 dollars.

But, when it comes to cooling, ATI is struggling to compete. Two X1900XTs produce enough heat to warm one nice room back in snowy Hanover, and the whining of the fans is pretty irritating, especially at 2AM. At the same time, 7950GX2 is as silent as the grave.

You can expect ATI to take on Nvidia's 7950GX2 with claims of 100% game support. Yet, in fact, there are still apps where multi-GPU does nothing, regardless of the colour of the PCB.

HDR with AntiAliasing is probably ATI's killer point. But, the decision is yours. Bear in mind, too, that DX10-capable GPUs are coming in half a year, or less. ยต
