200GB optical drive on way

Layers snow Blu-ray HD DVD
Fri Nov 25 2005, 08:51
JAPANESE FIRM Ricoh believes it will be able to release a 200GB optical drive by 2008, according to today's Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

The technology will use eight layers rather than the two promised by Sony's Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD tech.

But - and here's the rub - the optical head uses a similar design to HD and Blu-ray, so Ricoh's tech will be able to work with these two competing camps.
