Intel's market slide shows consoles are whitewash

Intel Developer Forum Research firm caught smoking something...

STATISTICS ARE A BEACH, to say the least. At this morning keynote, Otellini mentioned that the on-line market in entertainment business is stil a PC domain.

While this is true, courtesy of numerous millions of MMO titles on the market, the console segment was vastly underrated. Figures in this slide speak of 2.7 million networked consoles in Asia, and quite frankly - we were astouned by the figures that were shown here.

2.7 million online consoles in Asia... DFC Intelligence is based on what, if we may ask?

While we have nothing against Intel folk boosting American ego a bit, talking about 2.7 million in Asia and 7 million in US is just plain wrong. We're not interested in who was the analyst here, but just the numbers of PlayStation 2 consoles (yes 2, not the new 3) in Asia outnumber the number of on-line consoles mentioned here, yet alone Nintendo Wii or Microsoft Xbox 360.

Intel's analyst firm chosen for the job probably ommited Japan as such, but in a keynote of this magnitude, this was just uncalled for. The PC has the massive lead when it comes to on-line gaming, but just not by that margin. There are more than 10 million networked consoles in Japan alone. µ
