AMD talks about Live

The chip maker totally ignored its rival's upcoming Conroe and made a presentation as if it was business as usual. It talked about its new, New York fab and focused a lot on its Live platform and Turion 64 X2 dual core mobile chip.

It didn't talk about buying ATI, 4x4 or any real future stuff and it didn't talk much about quad core either.

AMD's Live platform is supposed to be cool and quiet, as it is meant for media in living room PCs. The basic AMD Live machine has to use at least an Athlon X2 4200+ dual core CPU or faster, requires Windows Media center edition and Vista when it's available, and its graphics have to be Windows Vista Premium (Aero) capable. The TV tuner is optional.

AMD Live makes much of streaming audio and video. Syncing with the multimedia content with your notebook is a cinch. It offers AMD Live! Compress to store up to ten times more movies and TV shows on your drive and it can reformat the video content to make it usuable on some other devices.

It should make the sharing of files and resources such as printers much easier and it offers 25GB free online storage to which it will automatically back up your My picture and My Music folders and will allow remote access to your machine.

Live machines should be available shortly if anyone wants to make them of course. We will ask the distributors what do they think about it and whether they will sell it.
