Intel eyesore continues to blight Austin

Tower is five stories short of a building
Fri Nov 08 2002, 09:10
LOCAL NEWSPAPER the Austin American Statesman, said a half built Intel building in downtown Austin continues to be a blot on the landscape.

Intel is still trying to sell the property as a one off bargain, the newspaper said, but buyers appear to be thin on the ground.

The building was originally to be 10 story 400,000+ square foot Tower of Babel but only five stories have been built and the skeleton offends the eye of the observer, apparently.

But property is a buyers' market in Austin because of the tech downturn and the half-building, estimated to be worth around $20 million, looks like it won't attract a buyer any time real soon now.

The newspaper said Intel is paying $500,000 in property taxes a year, but has a subsidy from the city authority amounting to over $10.6 million in incentives.

Here's the story -- no picture unfortunately.

But here's one from the Austin Chonicle. ยต
