Google boss could be Obama tech guru

Anyone but Ballmer
Tuesday, 21 October 2008, 16:18

PRESIDENT IN WAITING Barak 'Steve' Obama has made it quite clear that technology will be at the top of his agenda should the Republicans fail to cheat the Democratic candidate out of the election result this time around.

It has been said that Obama sees the Internet as an enormous economic engine, driving the US economy in much the same way as the railways did in early American history. And Obama has already pledged that one of his first Presidential edicts will be the creation of a new cabinet position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

A number of names have been bandied about by the likes of Business Week, some of them vaguely viable, some of them downright scary.

Vint Cerf, Google's boss of all things internet, despite promising that his all-powerful, evil hating employer would remain neutral throughout the election process, has been spotted palling around with the young pretender to the throne of the world at a number of high profile events.

But whether Cerf can be torn away from Googantua megabucks to live on a White House salary remains to be seen. He'll probably retain his position as a non executive director and just cash the paychecks for doing sod all, the same as every other political adviser on the planet.

And even the Bellowing Beast of Redmond, Microsoft head honcho Steve Ballmer, has been mentioned as a possible candidate though the chances of him relinquishing his position at the reigns of the world's richest corporation are slim to none in our book.

Well there'll be no chance of the folks on Capitol Hill catching a quick nap during one of his speeches, that's for sure. ยต

Ever heard anything about its political past? I guess not. I have. Of course I have a government degree. Maybe I should be the new CTO of America instead.

Elections

We had a federal election in Canada last week. Something like 10^6 people voted. The ballots are hand counted and the tallies were in to more than 95% confidence within 4 hours of the polls closing. Using people not machines keeps people involved in the vote, and anyone can scrutinize, anyone can raise an objection to any ballot. I've worked elections several times - the method is very easy to understand and keeps the BS to a minimum.

USA should get rid of voting machines. They are a bad idea.

Cheat?

Better stick to your side of the pond chap; you have no idea what you're talking about. George Bush won the popular vote in 2004 by 3 million votes. Hard to fudge those numbers. Get a grip, you guys over in Europe want this idiot to be president more than we do. And that makes us want to pick the other guy. Thanks for playing though.

Cheat!

Since when did the popular vote decide who got elected President?

I thought it was all about the electoral vote?

I need more schoolin' I guess.

And the electoral vote comparison between Bush and Kerry was 286 to 252.

Also, 3,000,000 votes is only about 2.5%.

But the "cheating" isn't about the number of votes that showed up to be counted. It is about the fact that some votes were tabulated incorrectly or dropped altogether if they didn't support Bush.

Re: Cheat?

I think you're taking the language used here in le Inq a little too seriously (and by that, I mean you've just jumped over the edge with some fire-crackers in your shoes without actually knowing why you just jumped). Perhaps you should stick to Fox news, 'chap'.

The New American Bureaucracy

Welcome to the new American Buceacracy. We will grow the gov't as much as possible, and in an effort to push job creation we will put in cross-functional bureaucracies at all levels of gov't who will have absolutely no accountability, but who will be given large budgets.

Also in an effort to keep jobs from going overseas, we plan to tax companies more heavily, empower unions to make labor that much more expensive, and if you are still lucky enough to make a profit - we'll take a 2nd bit at the apple with a windfall profit tax. (It's not like America has the 2nd highest corporate tax rate in the developed world)

We wil also allow people to take up residency in a state for 13 days, vote in that state, and then move back to their previous residence (see NY Post). And we will encourage our Congressmen to not even maintain a home in their home district while taking a tax break on a theoretical 2nd home in Washington.

Uh, yeah. Cheat...

Well, "chap", seems someone doesn't know their history. Ohio alone had far more voting irregularities than the margin of W's victory. It is also a fact of history that Florida was decided wrongly in 2000. You may be "playing", but I assure you that we are not!

World outside of U.S. - please disregard jackass remarks such as the one above - he does not speak for America as we all shall see in another couple of weeks. I voted today and wish everyone would vote early so we could get this over already and start repairing the damage...
