AMD'S JOHN BYRNE has given an enticing interview to the hardware website X-bit labs.

John has recently been appointed as, (let's get this right) Vice-President of Worldwide GPU Channel Sales. He's Britannia's ATI big hitter, and he's got the BMW to prove it. An interview with the website of hardware tech's First Lady, Anna Filatova, should prove enlightening. Right?

In the interview, John makes a number of thrilling observations. Let's take a quick look. "As you know, we don't comment on future products" is a great one. "We don't comment on unannounced products" is a stunning follow up, as is "Unfortunately, we don't comment on future pricing."

Oh well, better luck next time, eh?

On a more serious note, the interview does contain a few morsels, if not outright nuggets. DisplayPort-compatible products, we are told, will be out later this year - the delay in bringing this to the market, it seems, has been the move from the 1.0 to 1.1 standard, due to be ratified soon.

The All in Wonder brand, additionally, is dead - until such point as it isn't, handily. "There are no current plans for new [AIW] products on the roadmap... Of course we do reserve the right to use the brand in the future if the opportunity presents itself." Of course.

ATI slashed prices on chips and products across the board last year, and was widely accused of trying to buy marketshare, much to the annoyance of its partners, who consequently had to operate on a razor-thin margins. Interesting, it seems that Byrne is signalling an intent to put a stop to that, commenting that "I want to ensure that our Add-In-Board partners have a Profitable Business when selling our products."

And as for the one thing we all want to hear about, the joys of R600:

"Traditionally, at ATI, we have always had a strong dedication to quality - and this is an ethos that is shared with our colleagues throughout AMD. Quality means putting out the best solution possible - not rushing products to market."

So now you know. Thankfully, we suspect that there's little danger of R600 being rushed anywhere. ยต
