AROUND 130 ex-ATI workers have been given the order of the boot from the office in Markham, where they were happily beaving away until AMD tipped up.

AMD spokesperson Dave Erskine said the casualties were minimal. "Our core businesses have very little overlap," he told the York Region newspaper, while confessing: "We didn't need two finance departments or two human resources departments."

The paper says that of 375 employees dumped from AMD's global workforce since the ATI acquisition, almost half have been ex-ATIers.

Erskine, talked of "bumps", saying the total layoffs represented just two per cent of the 16,000 global workforce.

He reckoned the "biggest part" of the ATI deal "won't be seen at the outset, but by 2008 and 2009."

By then it's expected more Markham employees will be out looking for new jobs. ยต
