Nokia closes German phone factory

The body count rises
Tuesday, 15 January 2008, 16:20

FINNISH Nokia said it will close a German factory and axe 2,300 workers.

In what is a black day for honest workers, this takes the total job cuts in the last five INQ stories to something in the order of 5,300. What'll they all do?

The factory in Bochum just isn't as competitive as it could be elsewhere in Europe, Nokia said in a statement. And there we were thinking that the EU was formed to call a halt to these sorts of shenanigans.

"Due to market changes and increasing requirements for cost-effectiveness, production of mobile devices in Germany is no longer feasible for Nokia," executive vice president Veli Sundback is credited with saying.

The production line at the site will grind to a halt and other activities such as research and development will probably be exported to India, where people are a lot poorer and therefore cheaper to employ, the company sort of said, if you read between the lines.

Sundback described the decision to axe expensive workers in exchange for cheaper ones as "tough".

Yeah, right. ยต

Citigroup Axes Many More

"NEW YORK - Citigroup Inc. lost almost $10 billion in last year's final three months, the largest quarterly deficit in its 196-year history, and slashed its dividend and 4,200 jobs as it recorded a mammoth write-down for bad bets on the mortgage industry.

...

The reduction of 4,200 jobs in the fourth quarter is in addition to 17,000 layoffs announced in the spring, and chief financial officer Gary Crittenden said during a conference call that more job cuts would be on the way."
