Sun kills off Java animals

JDK 7 build out in the wild
Wed Aug 23 2006, 16:21
NEWS FROM Ray Gans, senior program manager at Sun, has reached us via his blog regarding the naming scheme of future Java revisions.

Code names like 'Mustang' and 'Dolphin' will be dropped in favour of a new project naming scheme based around the company's new open source model, previously reported by us here.

Ray announced the news via the following poetically written statement: "So with some sadness, we're walking Mustang out from her stable one last time to let her roam free in the meadows and we're opening the gate so Dolphin can return to the sea. Code names come and go and it's time to move on to our bright new future."

In other Java related news, Ray announced the release of JDK 7 (formally 'Dolphin') build 1 from the Java binary site. This will be shortly followed by a publicly accessible Subversion repository of JDK 7 code. µ
