IBM claims Intel Paxville beats AMD, sets record

Updated So where is the Opteron in the equation?
Tuesday, 1 November 2005, 18:52
BIG BLUE introduced a Paxville MP version of its X3 server range and claimed its X366 with DB2 UDB set a world record for four CPU systems using the TPC-C online transaction processing benchmark.

But if you look at the IBM PDF linked below, it seems that an HP Opteron system is available in a week's time, while Big Blue's Poxville machine may be available in five months. Look at the footnotes.

The Opteron machine from HP will be available on November 8th, while the IBM machine will be available around the 31st of March 2006, too close to April Fool's Day for comfort.

As one of our waggish server savvy readers commented: "Even if the Paxville system is 9% faster, you will get 3.13 times the processing power from the Opteron since you were able to afford 3.44 of them. Aren't statistics fun."

The firm International Business Machines (BB) claimed that the X3 architecture bring "mainframe inspired capabilities" to its 7000 series xSeries servers.

IBM said that it hit 221,017 tpmC and the dual core version of the x366 delivered 46 per cent more performance than the single core version. ยต
