NOT NORMALLY THE MOST interesting of devices, but uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) are pretty important for a lot of folk.

If you have two specific models of the American Power Conversion Back-UPS CS UPS line, you'd better check them out though, because the company is recalling them because of potential safety problems that could cause fire.

The number of devices recalled worldwide is over two million, the firm said in a statement, with 900,000 devices alone in the US.

The firm received eight reports of units overheating and melting the outer casing.

The two models are the CS350 and the CS500, which are both delivered in 120 volt and 230 volt versions.

The UPSs were sold through distributors, shops and via catalogues worldwide.

Only these models are affected: AB0048 through AB0251 .BB0104 through BB0251 and JB0125 through JB0251. Models with an R suffix are not affected.

The firm said that affected units should be immediately turned off and unplugged, and there's more information about replacements here. µ
