Kodachrome's time is up

Fade to black
Monday, 22 September 2008, 09:41

KODACHROME IS ABOUT to be consigned to the dustbin of history.

The celluloid film, which famously once shot President Kennedy's assassination, has been almost totally replaced by digital stills and video.

Only one commercial lab in the world, Dwayne's Photo in Kansas, develops Kodachrome.

Eastman Kodak makes the slide and motion-picture film in 35mm format and in production runs a year apart.

While Kodak won't say when the last production occurred, its current stocks currently on sale have a 2009 expiration date and there is talk that the film maker will not bother releasing anymore.

A spokesKodak said that it was a low-volume product lately and all volumes of colour film are down.

For decades, Kodachrome was the standard for professional colour photography and filmmaking. It was eclipsed by video and easy-to-process colour negative films. µ

End of an Era

Truly a sad but expected development.

Cram all the megapixels (gigapixels even) you want into a digital photo and it still can't match the potential of 35mm. For the average gent, digital is "good enough".

Alas, I've been strictly digital for almost a decade (unless you count the Polaroid Instant), but the truth still hurts.

Pretty Much

Imagine my surprise to find this on the INQ this morning. I work there. :)

It's a shame, really. Kodachrome makes for a really good image and it lasts virtually forever under the right storage conditions.

Yawn.

Really it's not a surprise. Fuji's been beating Kodak up and taking their lunch money for years. And the really good forms of Kodachrome are already gone leaving only the blander, grainier 64ISO version.

A Retrograde Step...

Now this is a sad story, I always loved shewing slides at my local Astronomical Society, there was something personal, the glow of the light from the top of the projector and the hum of the fan, slides jamming, remounting tatty ones in Gepe mounts...
Sad days in deed ;o(

It's a wonder I can think at all

And though my lack of education hasn't hurt me none
Everything looks better in black and white

They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day
