Copyright cops target British downloaders with lame ads

If you download movies, people will laugh at you
Thursday, 3 July 2008, 19:18

THE LATEST ATTEMPT at anti piracy scaremongering by the British entertainment industry consists of a stingy office worker called Nigel who downloads films illegally to his laptop.

Yes, this is how the Industry Trust for Intellectual Property Awareness reckons it can persuade people to buy DVDs in expensive, over-packaged box sets, instead of quickly and easily downloading them; by comparing anyone who downloads films to your average office worker. Sounds like a solid plan to us.

The previous attempt by the Industry Trust had buyers of counterfeit DVDs being compared to a decidedly more sleazy, dodgy looking Nigel from down the pub. The new metrosexual, yuppie, office Nigel is apparently meant to address the new and ever increasingly ‘dangerous’ Internet downloader, who doesn’t just lurk, unshaven in grotty looking pubs, but might even work in your office. Shock! Horror!

The ad has Nigel’s co-workers giggling over his tightfistedness in a display worthy of primary school bullies. Calling him "Knock-off Nigel", in what we assume is supposed to be a humourous little ditty, Nigel’s co-workers, accuse him of horrific crimes against humanity like nicking food from the office fridge as well as his despicable illegal downloading habits. Ugh…what a repulsive character that Nigel is.

Despite complaining over and over again that the Industry is going bust due to piracy and illegal downloading, it still managed to cough up 1.6 million pounds ($3.2 million) for the ad campaign, which will tediously grace Britain’s TV screens for a whole year.

But, as Industry Trust director general Liz Bales notes, "Illegal downloading is the fastest growing threat to the U.K. entertainment industry", so spending lots of money on a very lame and most likely inefficient ad campaign sounds definitely worth it. µ

Kinda stupid...

...as the avid downloader wouldn't necessary be watching regular television.

While I’m on this subject, it pissus me off that I have to put up with that sh*t Anti piracy advert every time I play a DVD – doesn’t it make you want to pirate just so you wouldn’t have to put up with this annoying crap.

So you know we are fed up of bending over and taking it so come up with a new strategy that doesn’t penalise the honest consumer jerks!

UK entertainment industry

I'll Do Anything... (to get into showbiz, even putting my childish self into the hands of BBC homosexuals)
Big Brother... ("focking paki")
Celebrity Big Brother (George 'the cat' Galloway)
Pets Win Prizes
Phone scams
Chris Tarrant

Maybe the UK Entertainment industry needs to be destroyed.

Might be time to call some of the people that made Blade Runner

Isn't Blade Runner supposed to be one of the cheapest well made scifi movies ever? Maybe Hollywood needs to give them a ring. Because as long as the movies are DRM protected, people are either going to pirate them or want to back them up.

And would it really be so bad for Hollywood(don't know aquat about other countries versions of it) to go belly-up? I say we wait and see what develops after Hollywood is destroyed.

We might like the result of a Hollywoodless world.

Advert? What advert?

The best thing about "borrowing" programmes, movies and all sorts from the illegal internet sites is that there are no adverts. Those ever benevolent pirate folk always kindly filter out all the silly ads and trailers.

It may well be that the target audience of this advert could be spared the indignity of a 5 min break every 10 mins.

Still, it is a catchy tune.

Ads??

They dont seem to get it... If you use bittorrent to get your tv shows you never see any ads.

They need the reverse approach

Rather than pushing the idea that a downloader is somehow a lower form of life they ought to be more realistic.

They should have some poor lantern-jawed IT wizz forever getting hassled by office colleagues for the latest movie, game, etc. and them never returning the favours or thinking of it come promotion time.

Strapline could be "Your freeloading fellow workers are NOT your friends."

Would do more to reduce DVD copies in the office than this ad . . .
