AMD extends Opteron warranty to three years

No trays. Dealers are ecstatic. Their arms are not up

RESELLERS ARE REJOICING that at long last Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is selling its "Opteron" microprocessors in "flat packs", which the firm calls PIBs.

That's short for processor in a box.

The Opterons are three year warranty components and packed for retail purposes, but don't come with a heatsink nor with a fan.

But they do replace both the boxed and tray components of yore.

Oddly, this only apples to Opterons, and not to Athlon 64s, nor to Sempr0ns.

Previously, the 8xx series of four to eight way CPUs have only been sold as tray parts and only had one year warranty.

Meanwhile, we learn that resellers were told of the temporary shipping shut down some weeks before it happened early this month. As we said yesterday, there's no shortage.

PibIts new software for shipping SKUs (stock keeping units) appears to be working, we understand.

Here be the PIB. µ

* HOWEVER, a German reseller says this doesn't appear to be the case in Europe. He says that the PIBs without a heatsink are just for the server blade market. Confusion reigns. We'll try and find out, unless all the AMD Europe people are watching red cars whizzing around.
