Vonage "working around" Verizon patents

Two out of three ain't bad

A VOICE OVER IP outfit that starts with the letter V called Vonage has "substantially completed" the deployment of workarounds for two of three VoIP patents claimed by another company that starts with a V called Verizon.

Vonage was sued by Verizon on five counts of nicking technology in its Voice-over-IP operations. A jury found the company guilty of breaching three Verizon patents and fined the company $58 million.

There were some fears that Verizon would not be able to operate without using technology based around the three offending patents. But according to Network World, Chairman and Interim CEO Jeffrey Citron said during a conference call that two workarounds which target most of Vonage's customers had been rolled out with the third workaround covering wireless voice being developed.

So far no-one had noticed the technology change, he said. The workarounds, which Citron didn't describe in depth, would protect the company if Verizon's appeal isn't successful. However he said that he is "quietly confident" on that score.
