Worldwide chip sales rose in August

SEMICONDUCTOR sales revenues grew to $22.7 billion worldwide in August, up 5.5 per cent from August 2007, rising everywhere except the Americas where they fell 7.3 per cent.

"Global sales of semiconductors remained strong in August," said Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) president George Scalise.

Strongest growth was in the Asia Pacific region, which saw revenues rise 12 per cent year on year. Regional sales grew 2.2 per cent in Europe and 3.1 per cent in Japan, year-on-year.

"Sales of personal computers and cellular handsets continued to be the principal drivers of demand," Scalise continued, adding, "Continuing price pressure on DRAMs and NAND flash memory dampened overall industry growth. Excluding memory products, industry sales were up by 11.4 per cent year-on-year in August."

Global semiconductor sales revenues have approximately doubled over the past six years. µ
