AMD complains to India about Intel

Love doesn't conquer all
Tue Feb 19 2008, 07:53

CHIP firm AMD is to lodge a complaint against Intel for monopolistic practices in India.

The Economic Times said AMD will allege that tenders favour Intel over its own microprocessors, and it wants the Competition Commission of India to step in and intercede on its behalf.

It wants tenders to give AMD a chance as Intel is currently gaining market share without having to do very much.

But a Chipzilla spinner has hit back, saying that it believes in a "level playing field" for everyone, without exceptions.

This expression has got to be one of the worst ever. Soccer is a game of two halves, so even if the pitch is, er pitched at a 45 degree angle, and the ball obeys the law of gravity for Intel in the first half, surely the ball doesn't move against gravity when the teams change ends after half time?

Perhaps it would help AMD if it had a complete set of microprocessors with which to compete against Intel, the absurdly cynical might wonder.

More here.

I would be surprised ...

if customers in India were purchasing the more expensive chips from Intel. I think they'd be buying at the lower end of the spectrum, where AMD is fairly competitive.
