The first round of Computex heatsinks sinks in

Spheres, nautiluses, and huge hunks of aluminum
Wednesday, 7 June 2006, 02:30
WANDERING AROUND COMPUTEX in the pre-show hours, several heatsinks jumped out at me. One was from Spire/Speeze, and the other two from Coolermaster. They are a neat for different reasons, and none are anything close to alike.

First up is the Spire Fourier II, or something close to that. The person setting up their booth did not know the final spec, but the part is labeled SP606B3, and I am told the web site for it won't go live until it is launched next week. Either way, this thing is freakin' huge. You can't really tell by the pictures, but if you compare the baseplate to the rest, you get an idea of the size. When you see something that big on a stand, it makes an impression.

Next up we go to CoolerMaster and their industrial air-conditioner inspired Space Navi unit. Again, this one is cool, pun intended, and is shaped like none of the others I saw so far. The fan for it is internal, and it has clips for AM2 and LGA775.

The other one they had reminded me of the Lian-Li nautilus shaped case, probably because this is a slick aluminum nautilus inspired cooler. The Hyper Sphere is odd looking, not in a bad way, just odd. If you are an engineer, you will probably stare at it for a while trying to figure out what the half-cladding of grey plastic does for airflow, I know I did.

This is only the first batch of heatsinks out there, and there will no doubt be many more interesting ones before the show is done. More when I see them. ยต
