China and Russia are novices

WHILE THE world plus dog bangs on about Russian or Chinese hackers, new statistics show that most hacks are carried out by North Americans.

According to Symantec, the US generates more malicious computer activity than any other country. These hackers are linked together in highly efficient crime rings which make the Russian Mafia operations look like a bunch of school yard bullies.

According to Symantec's twice-yearly Internet Security Threat Report about a third of all computer attacks worldwide in the second half of 2006 originated from machines in the United States.

This easily surpassed runners-up China, which generates 10 percent of attacks, and Germany, which generates seven percent. The Russians didn't even make the top three.

US machines are more likely to be caught in "bot network activity". The US is also home to more than half of the world's "underground economy servers" which are corporate computers that have been commandeered to facilitate clandestine transactions involving stolen data.
