Japan's DoCoMo spends big for high-speed Super 3G

$1.7 billion for upgrade

MOBILE PHONE outfit DoCoMo is ploughing $1.7 billion to build a Super 3G mobile phone network by 2010.

According to the Nikkei, the service will be an upgrade of the company's FOMA third-generation system. So far DoCoMo has spent 25.4 billion to install some 40,000 dedicated FOMA base stations nationwide.

However the new system will have transmission speeds which are equal to those of fibre-optic cables.

The new system will manage 100 megabits per second which is 260 times faster than what the outfit can currently manage. A DoCoMo spokes DoCoMo confirmed the company's plans, but would not say much more. Apparently DoCoMo will begin testing the technology this year.
