Chinese boffins have 150MHz Windows chip

Instruction set, process unknown
Friday, 2 August 2002, 10:08
SOMEHOW WE MISSED a paragraph in a recent, and quite excellent report on news.com about the IT industry in China which underlines the report yesterday that semi manufacturers on the mainland are pushing ahead with CPU development.

In a three part report on the IT industry at the beginning of last month, Michael Kanellos reported that the state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences has already developed a 150MHz CPU which is Windows compatible.

The exact nature of the CPU remains unknown, with details of its design, its instruction set and the process it is being manufactured on being kept under tight wraps.

Sources tell the INQ that semiconductor designers in China have made big strides in making CPUs - we believe that an Alpha clone, for example, is being used in military and scientific supercomputers, although as far as we are aware, no company ever had a licence for such advanced technology.
