Origami is just a PC

CeBIT 2006 World, meet "Ultra Mobile PC"

M$ ORIGAMI CONCEPT is crawling slowly to life. Although the name "Origami" sounded really cool, the tradition of translating cool codenames into dull retail ones just has to continue (remember AMD ThunderBird? Spitfire? SledgeHammer? Intel Yamhill? M$ Blackcomb etc.).

Samsung named its Origami the "Ultra Mobile PC" - Q1, as a first model in Q series of portable computers. In rather modest dimension frame (227.5 x 139.5 x 26.5 mm), with the weight of only 774 grams - Samsung engineers placed Intel Celeron M ULV processor clocked at 900 MHz with DDR-II system memory clocked at 400 MHz.

The company used an 7" LCD monitor with native resolution of 800x480 pixels. The hard disk, where Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition, resides is Samsung's own 30-gig mobile thingie. Connectivity is ensured by WiFi (54 Mbits, of course) and Bluetooth 2.0. Options include GPS and DMB / DVB tuners, and Korean WiBRO standard.

In the end, here's where all the hype ended: the device looks cool, but a very high estimated retail price (around 1500-1800 euros) is just high-enough to keep most folks away. Better luck next time. ยต
