A CAMPAIGN has started to fight against the proposed introduction of a national identity card here in the UK.

The pledge states that "I will refuse to register for an ID card and will donate £10 to a legal defence fund, but only if 10,000 other people will also make this same pledge."

So far, 1,581 people have signed up. The "New Labour" minority government proposes to hatch a scheme which will make it a criminal offence, eventually, not to be in possession of an ID card.

Here's the pledge page. µ

* PLEDGE BANK is put together by mySociety, which is a charitable organisation and which launched yesterday. The owners of the site have asked us to point out there are plenty of other pledges in progress as well.

** A READER points out that the pledge page is itself a national database, but of dissenters to the scheme. How useful for the .gov, he suggests.
