THE launch of the device which was supposed to sweep the plasma television off the shelves this Christmas, the Laser TV, has been delayed.
Mitsubishi Digital Electronics, has told the television industry to expect a major laser TV announcement at a US trade show in January. However it will not say how long it will take before the technology goes on sale afterwards.
Either way the first laser TV was supposed to be in the shops in time for this Christmas.
Laser TVs can produce twice the range of colours of current flat panel models while being thinner, lighter and use less juice.
It was believed that the technology would take over from plasma at the 40 inch screen size and above leaving the smaller screens to LCDs.
The delay appears to be at the production side of the release rather than anything to do with the television technology.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a couple of other key component manufacturers haven't quite ramped up as fast as was expected," Wilkie said.

This company smells fishy as hell.

I still cannot grasp how laser tvs are supposed to be thinner than either PDP or LCD tvs. Wouldn't laser tvs entail some sort of rear projection? That would rather make bulkier like CRT tvs (if not nearly as heavy). I'm baffled...
Is part of the Misubishi Group -

They aren't going anywhere.

Yes laser TVs use projection, but are supposed to have a better colour gamut, weigh 50% less than large LCDs and Plasma TVs, and use less power.
But won't we have to wear special glasses??

Sorry ... just messing with the noobs there J ... heh heh.
Laser TVs have three color wavelengths (R,G,B) reflect off a DMD to create the image instead of having a color wheel filter the white light in a DLP.

Laser TVs sound great but I wonder if they suffer the same geometry problems.
Still think I'd prefer a SED.. Someday...
CRTs are still the best.
Too bad nobody makes good CRTs anymore.
Field Effect Display, now produced as "JUMBOTRON", What Nigerian Kiddie would Cry Hour for One?

SED, same thing & promised two years ago for this fall. NOTHING. You Just Cann't Trust EM!

The next step after laser is phaser & then its quantum televisions. With quntum TV some freaky things could happen...like having reality project into the TV & then next thing you know two gorgeous playboy playmates are watching you spank the monkey.

Or not.
To the person who posted about the quantum television, that technology has been around since the 70's, it's called L.S.D. :P Available at a street corner near you.
With Quantum TV, you never get to see the end of the show. You start off on one channel, but when you jump to another channel, there's no "last channel" option, so you keep leaping from channel to channel, always hoping that your next leap will be the leap home.

That's what I read in the Wall Street Journal, anyway.
