Turkeys quiver as more premises suspected of Avian Flu

Thanks be to god

IT MUST BE the unluckiest thing in the world to be a turkey. Over in America, many have been slaughtered to satisfy the appetites of citizens grateful that they birds up just as the pilgrims on the Mayflower were getting a bit peckish.

But even though for known reasons us Brits in Blighty don't celebrate Thanksgiving Day, that doesn't mean turkeys breathe a sigh of relief through their wattles.

According to UK government department DEFRA, a fifth set of premises is suspected of harbouring poultry which may be suffering from Avian Influenza.

The government department doesn't say exactly where it is, but it's inside the existing surveillance zone, and the butchers are heading in there to "cull" - for which read "kill" - any bird they find quacking, making gobbling noises, or cheeping.

Said acting chief vet Fred Landeg: "The national ban on bird gatherings remains firmly in place. Movement restrictions apply in the protection, surveillance and restricted zones, and bird keepers in those zones are required to house or otherwise isolate their birds from wild birds." µ

Mad Humans Disease

They never seem to learn. All the food scares we've had happen mainly because of improper un-natural farming methods.
It's a simple fact that if you're keeping animals on a large scale, then you won't be able to notice if individual ones get ill.
Of course, because of the factory-farming methods, even if you do keep your animals well - you may have purchased one that's ill, or they could become infected through any of the usual ways diseases get spread.

It just shows the level of incompetence when they cull a whole bunch of animals - "just in case" they are sick.....if you can't check up on them individually then you should realise that farm's too big, or - it needs more workers.

The world's a more pleasant place when the farms aren't all concentrated and the animals are at least free-range - which also helps them stay healthier.

What do they expect, keeping them in cages and small spaces. Doesn't the smell ever indicate that just maybe, they're being set up to fall sick.
I'm a vegetarian anyway, I refuse to join in with the insanity and cruelty.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
