ZILOG SAID it has released a new real time OS for the latest versions of its extremely long-in-the-tooth Z80
chip.
The RZK, said Zilog, is a real time pre-emptive multitasking kernel which includes a large feature set and APIs (application programming interfaces).
It includes pre built object modules optimised for the eZ80 core, allows 12 ms context switching, needs less than 18K of ROM, and allows cooperative and time slice scheduling.
The OS is supplied as a C library module with source and header files and is compatible with the Zilog integrated development environment.
Z80s support linear memory space up to 16MB, and has dual CPU register sets.
The Z80 is a venerable, hoary old eight bit microprocessor first launched in 1976. Its inventor, according to this Wikipedia page, left Chipzilla after working on the 8080. And it was used in Clive Sinclair's ZX80 and ZX81, as well as the Osborne, the Amstrad PCW, the dual Commodore 128, the Tatung Einstein and the Nintendo Game Boy.
It just won't go away... µ
