AMD puts GDDR5 on R700 graphics cards

AMD IS TO STICK GDDR5 memory on its upcoming ATI Radeon R700 graphics cards.

AMD said it is working with a number of leading memory providers, including Samsung, Hynix and Qimonda, to bring GDDR5 to market. Qimonda confirms it is delivering the memory now.

The firm said data rates supported by GDDR5 are up to five times that of GDDR3 and four times that of GDDR4 , enabling more bandwidth over a narrower memory interface.

The memory standard is also applicable tor stream processing, where GPUs may be used in parallel to address complex, AMD noted.

According to AMD senior graphics veep, Rick Bergman: “The days of monolithic mega-chips are gone."

In a statement he said, "AMD believes that GDDR5 is the optimal way to drive performance gains while being mindful of power consumption." µ

hmm

Do you mean the RV770? I thought the R700 was now going to be dual GPU version...

All a bit confusing really!

DDR5 doens't even exist yet

Not sure if you do this on purpose but GDDR5 is not the same as DDR5.

What would Jen-Hsun say?

According to AMD senior graphics veep, Rick Bergman: “The days of monolithic mega-chips are gone."

That must be why NVIDIA's new GT200 is the biggest graphics chip ever!

Buy All DDR3 On Earth, Then GO DDR5

Several Days ago someone mentioned there isn't much difference between gddr3 & gddr4, NOT Doubling.
Also transition from DDR2 to DDR3 seems Flawed Somewhere. Basicly in both caases when it gets up to maximum speed at core, being ~same, Increase is NOT as Great as Expected.
This gddr5 Sounds Like Compliation of ALL DDR2/3/4 glitches & removes them. So Wala, Much Better Memory by Completeing Cycle for ALL.

Translation

“The days of monolithic mega-chips are gone."

"AMD believes that GDDR5 is the optimal way to drive performance gains while being mindful of power consumption."

Which actually means, "we still haven't managed to come up with a GPU faster than the G80"

GDDR5

Most of this article is old news. From what I hear, Qimonda's GDDR5 supports a 5GHz-ish max frequency, on a 75nm process. Samsung's goes up to 6GHz on a 60nm process, same with Hynix but 66nm. Qimonda was going to go to a 58nm process, have they done that for RV770? Or is it still at 75nm? I'm waiting for a smaller process with a higher top clock frequency to buy one of these new cards, but they do look amazing.

Niice

But why don't they put GDDR5 in the high end cards from now on till GDDR6 comes. And then GDDR4 in the Mid-Range and GDDR3 in the lower range.

Just 5 for the High and 3 for the mid and low range to have a low range card with GDDR3 and 128bit bus instead of the crappy 64bit. ATi may get some fans in the lower market who are on a tight budget.

I was looking for a 6200 AGP card for my brother there still being sold at £35 - 350mhz, 64bit for £35 no thanks. Imagine say a 3450 GDDR3 128bit for around £30-40 that's a bargain for the lower end least it'll a bit better and ATi's market share in that sector would go up probably the so called INTEL's up coming attempt.
