Head to head on patents
Tuesday, 19 February 2008, 07:43

AFTER being on the back foot on patent legal rows, Research In

Motion has decided to sue Motorola over several patents used for wireless devices.

RIM claims that Motorola has gone back on a deal it made over licensing the patents to competitors on a fair and reasonable basis.

It claims that Motorola is violating nine RIM patents and is breaching a 2003 agreement by refusing to negotiate reasonable terms for an extension beyond January.

The technology is used in Motorola's Razr smartphone and RIM's Blackberry.

RIM has popped down to Dallas to get a court to get a court to agree with it.

Motorola has dismissed the case as being 'without merit'.
