Intel 64-bit extensions threaten to mount AMD's Dark Mayor

The anti-Opteron strategy of the Intelloids

AN ARTICLE on PC Watch suggests further cunning plans Intel might incorporate in future microprocessors to scupper any intentions AMD has to grab the 64-bit market with its Opteron/Athlon64 CPUs.

The article builds on other speculation covered earlier in the INQUIRER, and covered in great detail in Chip Architect, here.

The article on PC Watch looks at future memory directions for the Prescott and the limits of the PAE (physical address extension).

Future processor Potomac - which has started to appear on roadmaps Intel is showing its OEM customers - looks like it will provide additional memory addressing.

Well, we think that's what it says - it calls Dirk Meyer the Dark Mayor, which we quite like, and there's a diagram there that makes things a little clearer.

When we say there, we mean here. µ
