SONY HAS released a new firmware update for the PSP.

Numbered 2.71 it adds the ability to download and save demo versions of games through the inbuilt internet browser and improves the LocationFree Player. It also adds a new “Goto Network Service” icon to the “Network” column.

Although this update looks enticing some PSP owners are not going to install it. The homebrew community recommends against it as the PSP will no longer be able to run homebrew software if it is installed. That is until a new exploit is found.

The homebrew community recommends sticking with firmware version 1.5.

In related news, a team of hackers are claiming to have produced a custom flash replacement for the PSP called the Epsilon BIOS. It is supposed to allow unrestricted homebrew and the ability to run unsigned code in kernel mode. It also promises to run UMD ISO's directly from the memory stick without requiring a separate ISO launcher.

It is understood that Epsilon BIOS will work with firmware 2.71. It will, however, require the upcoming undiluted platinum PSP mod chip to be installed.

Whether any of this is real we will find out in a few weeks. µ
