ATI preps 890TV chipset

Not necessarily a cross-dresser

WHAT IS ATI going to follow the successes of the 780G and 790FX chipsets with? How about the 890TV?

Word has reached us that the successor to these bad boys is up and running right now, and two things are known about them.

First is that the dev boards floating around have four 16x PCIe slots, no word if that is eight or 16x electrical though. Secondly, sources tell us that TV does not mean the obvious thing, but given the outputs on the 780G, it would not surprise anyone if these parts were well equipped.

Given the state of things now, if all goes well, we could be seeing boards by mid to late summer. ATI has been on a roll lately with launch timings, so we would not bet against this one hitting the marks. µ

The correct DDR2 vs DDR3

A comment angered me a bit because it is incorrectly worded.
DDR 400 CL2 does NOT equal DDR2 800 CL4 nor does it equal DDR3 1600 CL8.
I want to point out the performance happens to equal out on that, but in no way is it equal. DDR 2 has higher latency than DDR, likewise DDR 3 has higher latency than DDR 2. It takes more time (higher latency) to get more data. The higher latency is combated with faster speeds. Currently the trend in computer architecture is going for the higher latency and faster memory. The architecture is progressing to read more memory less. Therefore even though DDR 3 is higher latency, CPUs are reading more of it faster and in the long run (about a 1.5 years) DDR 3 will be better in every way than DDR 2. Currently, with the pricing, you are getting more for your $ with DDR 2. You could get DDR 2 1066 which is way better than DDR 3 1066.

Can't agree more with Teldar...

I bought a DDR3-based mainboard initially for my E8400 but with the huge price of the RAM, plus no discernable performance increase (in real-world usage, not benchmarks) I decided it was a complete waste of money. So I swapped it for a DDR2 board and RAM and pocketed the difference. When latencies come down as well as prices I'm sure it will be great, but as things stand AMD are missing out on nothing with not having a DDR3 offering. Leave it until '09, no-one will care.

DDR3 - Future

If you get a DDR2 module with the same clocks as DDR3, the DDR2 is more expensive.
Phenoms, if i'm not mistaken, already have support for this.
But to clear up a few issues, DDR3 does NOT have slower latencies. Latency speeds are adjacent to clock speeds, which means CL2 DDR400 is the same as CL4 DDR2 800
with that being said, CL8 DDR3 1600 would be the same as the latter(s)
It's not that latencies are slower, they've NEVER changed in years. DDR3 is also lower power. Faster + lower power + same latencies? It's win-win no matter how you look at it.
By the time AMD switches DDR3, it will be mainstream. It will be cheap(er) and DDR2 will be hitting artificial premiums just like DDR did when DDR2 debuted

DDR3

I don't know that I would agree that the switch to DDR3 really makes a whole lot of sense. Higher clocks, yes, however, higher latency and insanely stupid high cost. I'd look to stick with DDR2 for quite a while yet if you can. The performance increase doesn't support the cost increase for DDR3.
And the other thing, AMD would need processors to put with this chipset. They don't have anything have does DDR3 yet, I don't believe. AND they have already said the succesor to the 780/790 will come out in march of next year. (cannot provide link because don't remember where I read it.)

Are you saying

that the AM3 platform is getting pulled back into H2 '08 from H1 '09? Although it makes sense tactically given that the Intel world is going DDR3 right now it's hard to believe AMD is now on that much of a roll.

it's because Charlie is an ATI FANBOI DAAMIT

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
