Will someone think of the elephants

ONLINE AUCTION site Ebay has become the last home of the ivory trade and is threatening to encourage the extinction of the elephant, according to an animal rights group.

According to AP, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) are saying "tusk, tusk" to the "rampant trade" in ivory on the eBay online auction site.

Its surveys have shown that more than 2200 elephant ivory items have turned up on eBay websites. This is in breach of eBay's own wildlife policies, but seems to happen anyway.

Legally you are only allowed to flog antique ivory and for that you need to havee a certificate. To get around this poachers have been pretending their ivory is antique. Robbie Marsland, IFAW's British director said eBay needed to lead the way by banning ivory from their sites.

He said that only a global ban on all ivory sales will remove the cover under which this criminal activity currently operates and as a result, seriously help to decrease illegal trade and the cruel and unnecessary slaughter of elephants.

A spokeseBay said that the web site operated policies to restrict the sale of ivory in accordance with existing UK and international law.
