Brits pay through nose for domain names

Up to three times more than Canada
Mon Apr 18 2005, 16:08
WEB HOSTING COMPANY 1&1 charges UK residents £10.45 to register a .com Internet domain name, while customers in the USA or Canada are charged just $5.99 (£3.15) for the same service.

A company spokesman told the INQUIRER that the price difference reflected 'geographical differences' around the globe and said such a pricing policy is 'common practice' for multinationals like 1&1.

Richard Stevenson claimed UK pricing wasn't expensive and said that costs varied between geographical locations. Asked what these costs might be, Richard wobbled a bit and suggested we email our queries instead.

Rather, we decided to write the story. If we misunderstood anything Richard, feel free to email us.

The good news is that UK residents can use other domain name services in the US without being redirected to rip-off Britain.

Here's the US site. And here's the UK site. Sheesh. µ
