HARD DRIVE MAKER Hitachi said it is volume shipping what it claims is the highest performing notebook hard drive with the highest capacity to boot.

The Travelstar 200GB 7K200 is already being shipped in systems from Dell and Alienware.

Hitachi claims it has a 22 per cent performance improvement over its predecessor using PC Mark05 benchmarks. It also offers an encryption version of the drive.

The drive has 4.2ms average latency, 10ms average read time and 11ms average write time.

Although it is selling the HDD to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) already, it will also start selling the unit in shops over the summer, priced at $250. ยต
