Commodore 64 cleared in train crash

Ancient Intel scapegoated
Mon Feb 21 2005, 07:05
WHEN THE departures and arrivals computer went down at Dortmund Train Station, the journalists on the scene were quick to blame a Commodore 64 machine that was apparently running it.

According to a number of different news sources, the 20-year-old C64 died after years of valuable service. It would apparently cost more than three million Euros in software and hardware replace it.

The German news hounds rushed to dust off the few C64 bearded fans out there to comment. There were even a few offers from C64 fans to either give them a spare box or re-write some of the code.

The only problem was that the station's train timetabling system was not being run by a C64 at all. The machine, though ancient, was a Intel-310-System with 80286-Prozessor and Unix derivative Xerix.

News sources like ITW have since published a correction. There are some links to some of the German telly broadcasts here, so go have a gander. ยต
