I was halfway through an article called 'why the Mac is better' when it went and sued a reporter. Bad Apple, no cookie. No, monumentally bad, abysmally dumb dumb dumb Apple, no cookie, no story, no respect. I will tell you some things I think it is planning though.
One of the biggest was almost outed by His Cringelyness in a this column a few weeks ago, where he came very close to hitting the nail on the head. I won't bother to re-tread the details, it is worth reading yourself.
The point to all of this is that rancid overpriced, underpowered fashion victim of an excuse for a computer, the Mac Mini is not really a computer but an audio video component, just like Tuttone said in the INQ yesterday. No sane person would use it as a computer if she or he valued his or hers time and blood pressure, but it would do nicely for Internet movie cacheing and playback.
That is exactly what Apple is doing, and plans are well underway. While Cringely states that he has no insider knowledge, he is so close it is scary, so I guess he is just afraid Apple will unleash the hounds of the Baskerville typeface on him. My sources tell me two things, they didn't tell Cringely that the project is happening, and he is almost perfectly right.
Companies that make consumer electronics should be very, very afraid. The mindless sheep that slavishly buy Apple products will eat this one up, and they can form quite the digital media beachhead. Look for the announcement at the next big Apple event. Which probably won't be in the Big Apple (New York) or the Smoke (London). µ
