DATA RECOVERY company Kroll Ontrack has seen a 70 per cent increase in the requests for recovering data from flash media in the last year.
These increasing requests weren’t initially met with the right technology, meaning to the development of the capability to recover data from both flash media and solid-state disk (SSD) was a priority.
The amount of people asking for data recovery seems to have increased as the damage to these devices becomes more possible.
The two most common causes of damage to these devices are either a power interruption to the device causing electronics failure and/or data corruption or, the more probable cause, clumsy office workers sitting on the device or causing physical damage in some other way.
Due to the proprietary nature of controller chip manufacturing and programming, every flash and SSD recovery situation is unique, however Kroll Ontrack is now able to make data recoveries from flash and SSD devices possible.
Robert Winter, chief engineer at Kroll Ontrack explained that, “Flash memory is a key technology enabling new designs for many products in the business and consumer markets.
"However, the new developments and enhancements to the technology – larger storage capacity, diverse applications and performance – don’t exempt flash and SSD media from data loss. Flash and SSD storage can suffer some of the same causes of data loss as traditional storage, such as hardware failure or human error.”
Winter continued to say that as products such as flash and SSD become more in use the more companies need to come up with ways to recover lost data. µ
The increasing demand for flash memory recovery from mobile phone, digital recorders , xd / sd cards and memory sticks has seen our business grow with many hundreds of successful recoveries.
Basic repair is straight forward, but if the controller or connections cannot be repaired then it is necessary to remove the memory chip(s) read the raw data and build the files which is spread accross the various memory banks within each memory chip.
Examples of successful recovery include.
memory sticks sufferring from water damage including washing machine and sea water.
Fire damaged mobile phones and memory sticks.
Memory stick fried in Microwave oven.
Dog chewed memory stick,
Accidently knocked memory stick left in laptop during travel.
Over voltage on the USB connection
Accidently deleted files and photos, or camera overwritng previous images.
Mobile phone and iPhone recovery are also incresing in demand .
SSD drives are somewhat more complex because of the number of chips used to make up their total storage and take more time to recovery because of this complexity but effectively can be recovered just like any other data from a hard disk drive.
Always be sure the company you send your meusb memory stick to for repairhas the skills needed, we see far too many that have been attacked by a soldering iron and thick copper wire which c further damage the device because of the excessive heat used.
Search "usb data recovery" for a number of companies but ensure they offer a secure service and NDA (non-disclosure agreement)
