A SIX-PERSON startup is about to release a modular, open source hardware/software system which is based on Lego.

According to Linux Devices Bug Labs claims that device developers can build "anything" using its system. The " Bug" is made up of an ARM11-powered base and various modular add-ons.

Like Lego you start with a basic "BugBase" processor module which has an ARM1136JF-S CPU and 128MB of RAM. Additional features include built-in WiFi, a rechargeable battery, USB, Ethernet, and a mini LCD with button controls. It is about the weight of an iPhone".

Then you get expansion modules. Each BugBase can expand with up to four BugModules. These include things like a colour LCD display, a motion detector/accelerometer, a digital camera/videocam, and a GPS locator. The first modules out next year include a keyboard, touchscreen, and speakers.

The "Bug SDK" software development kit uses Linux 2.6.19, GPL-licensed Java, and a range of open source code. The bug module interface uses a JavaME-based phone stack, while open services gateway initiative provides an open-source, service-oriented runtime.

So far there is no news on how much this lot will cost. µ

Teleporter?

They also have a teleporter planned for release Q1, 2008....

I think I'll wait until the photon torpedo addon is launched.
