AMD weighs carbon cost as sands of time run out

No spring in Barton's step
Thursday, 22 September 2005, 10:58
THERE'S JUST no way that AMD will bow to environmentalist pressure and stop its plans to move staff to the Barton Springs watershed, the Austin Chronicle reports.

The newspaper reports that AMD is contractually committed to shift 2,900 people into an area which environmentalists want to protect, and it would cost a fortune for the chip firm to renege on the deal.

In August we reported that AMD is set to pollute Austin's "crown jewels" and rip out the soul of the city. Ginger group Move AMD said that the natural springs are home to endangered species, and a beauty spot for humanoids too.

Endangered species include the Barton Spring salamander, and the Austin Blind salamander, while other creatures include the Fountain Darters, and the Golden-Cheeked warbler.

AMD probably views itself as an endangered species.

But the Chronicle said that AMD has produced an unusual rebuttal in its defence. AMD will eliminate 10,000 vehicle miles from Austin roads, citing reports it commissioned. However, the Save our Springs Alliance reckons the surveys AMD commissioned used the wrong intersection as the basis.

The Save our Springs Alliance is here. µ
