IBM, Dell, Sun back AMD coprocessor plan

HP joins in too, Fujitsu S reckons it's got it already

CHIP FIRM AMD said a raft of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have backed its coprocessor "Torrenza" notion for the server market.

The firm said that Dell, Sun, IBM, Fujitsu Siemens and HP will evaluate the socket associated with Torrenza.

All the OEMs trotted out endorsements for the idea while Fujitsu Siemens said that it has already developed tech which can connect two socket servers and turn them into four way and eight way SMP machines.

Even Dell breathlessly expressed its excitement with Torrenza. Kevin Kettler, Dell's CTO, said Torrenza will let his firm provide cutting edge enterprise servers to its customers.

Intel, which holds its Developer Forum next week, is probably gazing at all of this and wondering how it can fox AMD's cunning plans. µ
