GEEKS OR Otaku as they're called in Japan, represent a market worth ¥290 billion ($2.782 billion) and that means they shouldn't be ignored by big business, a report said today.

The Japan Times said that favourite geek pursuits are breaking down and re-assembling PCs, comics, animation, games, and TV and movie stars. And there's 2.85 million of them in Japan with Akihabara in Tokyo now a mecca for the geeks.

The newspaper said that the electronics district is now full of local cafes which also offer a geek twist - apparently your average Otaku is fixated on maids and so there's a dozen "maid cafes" opened up.

You can find the entertaining feature here, together with a picture of a waitress dressed as a maid. µ
