The 60 year old said his hearing was irreversibly damaged by years of using studio headphones and that he now is forced to take 36-hour breaks between recording sessions to allow his ears to recover.
Writing on his website Townshend said that he had helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal components deaf.
"If you use an iPod or anything like it, or your child uses one, you MAY be OK ... But my intuition tells me there is terrible trouble ahead."
He said that when it comes to music downloading earphones are used at almost every stage of interaction and this made matters worse.
The Who were famous for their loud concerts, but Townshend thinks it was the studio headphones that caused his problems. Townshend's appeal is likely to fall on already deaf ears. Most of the people who know who he is are likely to be older than the editor and already a bit hard of hearing. [Pardon? You're fired. Ed]
