THE OUTSPOKEN Church of England has got its collars all in a twist about a violent video game.

The game, "Resistance: Fall of Man" shows a virtual shootout between rival gunmen with hundreds of people killed inside Manchester cathedral.

The church says Sony did not get permission to use the image and will not be forgiving the game maker.

It has demanded the game be withdrawn from shop shelves and that Sony should do penance for its sins.

Sony's use of the building was branded "sick" and "sacrilegious".

The Very Rev. Rogers Govender, the dean of Manchester Cathedral, told AP that for many young people these games offer a different sort of reality and seeing guns in Manchester Cathedral is not the sort of connection he wanted to make.

The cathedral was built with money from the Stanley family whose other contribution to history was betraying Richard III during the battle of Bosworth Field and sticking the Tudor dynasty on the throne.
