Before we start - a question for Via. If all of its processors are named after Old Testament prophets, then why does its chipset family have the name of a pagan Sun god?
The Apollo P4X266 supports up to 4Gb of double data rate (DDR) memory, and Via repeated its claims about exceptional performance, which we reported on from Computex.
Via said that the chipset will optimise system performance to a peak bandwidth of 2.1Gb per second. It also - and this is important during the cross over period - will support both 423 and 478 pin versions of the Pentium 4.
The company said that the chipset will offer migration to the up-and-coming P4M266 integrated North Bridge - which will be pin compatible with the P4X266.
It costs $34 for motherboard manufacturers when they buy in quantity. Which mobo makers have already got products? They're all frightened to say, but we believe Iwill, Soyo and Epox have put their toes in the water, hoping that the Big Santa Clara Piranha doesn't come nibbling them. µ
