NOKIA HAS ADDED personal information management (PIM) sync functionality to its Ovi media sharing platform.
The new services are still in beta form, but will allow users to synchronise their calendar, contacts, notes and tasks between a Nokia mobile device and an account on Ovi.com or the recently-launched Ovi PC Suite.
"Today we are showing people how you can easily backup, sync and share your content using Ovi services on your PC, the web and your mobile device", said Nokia's Jussi Nevanlinna.
According to Nevanlinna this move is part of Nokia's stepwise approach to rolling out services on its Ovi platform. Rather than bombarding customers with a slew of features that could be unstable due to being rushed, the company is hoping to integrate elements one by one, allowing it to respond to feedback and ensuring that each application is solid.
This means that users can more easily back up vital information as well as edit and update it through the online portal. There was no news as to whether this would also be able to synchronise with other PIM applications such as Outlook or Google calendar in the same way as other vendors such as Plaxo do.
Another new feature, dubbed 'Files on Ovi' allows a user to remotely access specified files stored on their PC (as long as it is connected to the internet) from any browser-enabled mobile phone or computer.
This feature is built on technology Nokia gained through last year's acquisition of Avvenu and also offers users some online storage space in which to keep files. µ
