Playstation 3 operating system does impossible

SONY'S new PS3 operating system seems to have borrowed an idea or three from Microsoft's Xbox 360.

It had already been seen at the GDC show that the PS3 was going to have an OS running in the background. The big idea is that players can switch between playing to other functions. This would include text and video chat.

However, this costs a bomb in terms of resources taking 64Mb of the 256Mb available XDR memory and 32Mb of the 256Mb of available GDDR3 memory.

According to Ars Technica, here, this will be like tying one arm behind the back of the PS3 just to run the operating system.

Somehow Vole managed to get on top of this problem, so I am sure that the back room boffins and boffinettes at Sony will have also worked out a way. µ
